Meramac Caverns Barn Gets a Fresh Coat

The original restoration of the Meramec Caverns advertising barn in Cayuga was completed on 1998.

The signage has held up very well. The majority of the wall is black shingles that we replaced in 1998, and the lower part is concrete. There are also four (4) wooden doors. These, however, were showing their age. The paint was peeling, the wood extremely dry; especially noticeable were the two loft doors near the peak.

77 Cars Cross The Chain of Rocks Bridge

On Sept 26, 2008 77 various types and ages of cars, and one motorcycle crossed the Chain of Rocks Bridge enroute to Springfield Illinois for the Mother Road Festival.

We had cars from Indianapolis Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri participate in the cruise. We followed the Old Route 66 thru Mitchell Ill to Edwardsville, from there we went thru Hamel to Staunton Ill. stopping at Henry's Rabbit Ranch. From there we went to Mt. Olive and stopped at Soulsby's gas station for some photos, then back to Route 4 and up to Springfield. While there, some of us participated in the parade of cars to kick off the start of the festival.

Czechs Check Out Route 66

For the second time this year, the Czech Route 66 Association in Prague, Czech Republic is touring the full “Mother Road.” The group, led by Zdenek Jurasek, a Prague radio station owner and D.J., loves the flavor of our down-home Route 66 communities.

Morris Cruisers Visit Dwight and Route 66

Early Saturday morning, September 20th, a happy group of Classic Car owners (50’s and 60’s cars) met at Wendy’s in Morris. This group represented members of the Morris Wendy’s Monday night cruisers called – One-Eyed Jacks!!! Their goal was to travel Route 66 from Joliet to Pontiac. This mini-tour’s first destination was the Route 66 Welcome Center in Joliet. They then proceeded through various towns and villages. In Gardner many were photographed in the two cell jail. While in Dwight - stopped for lunch at the Old Route 66 Family Restaurant, toured the Becker-Ambler Station and had photo opts and coffee at the Java Junction.
