Face Lift at the Dixie

Submitted by John Weiss, Chairman, Route 66 Museum

The Dixie Truckers Home in McLean, Illinois has a new look. The exterior has attractive awnings all around. Route 66, Stuckey’s, the Café and General Store are all predominant.

And The Winner Was...

A king-sized photo quilt made and donated by Cathie Stevanovich was recently raffled off by the Association. Chances were sold for $1 each, 6 for $5. In total $484.00 was raised for preservation.

The quilt was won by Jim and Pat Allen of Scotty's in Hamel at the 2009 Hall of Fame banquet. Jim and Pat chose to hang it outside Scotty's on Sunday, June 14th. The bar has been sold and it was the last day that Jim and Pat Allen were to be on site.

The photo of Jim and Pat accepting the Hall of Fame Award for Scotty's was one of the photos in the quilt - making it a wonderful keepsake not only of the Allen's induction into the Hall of Fame but of their involvement with our Association.

Our best wishes to Jim and Pat Allen for their years of service to those on the road and a big thank you for years of the best tricycle races anywhere!

Helping History

By John & Lenore Weiss

We sent out word that help was needed to spruce up our number one preservation project. That, of course, is the Odell, Illinois gas station. Painting, scraping and polishing was on the agenda.

What a fantastic turn out we had. Twenty-one people came to volunteer, from small children, one infant to mature adults. What a great, great sight it was!

A letter from a Route 66 Association of Illinois member and co-editor of The 66 News

Editor's note: It was Kathy Miller's passionate opinion on the following subject that inspired the web site team to create this new feature, 66 Soapbox. Here now is the first (of hopefully many!) opinions voiced here about all things Route 66!

Is the Great American Road Trip on Route 66 really that great? Over the past two weeks NBC broadcast a television show called “The Great American Road Trip.” They tout it as “a wholesome show the whole family can watch!” And it is just that, I can say that after watching it I agree, it is a wholesome family show! On the NBC website it says this about the show, “Adventure and competition prevail as seven families begin their journey across America on Route 66, beginning at Chicago's Wrigley Field.”
