Lidice: Remembrances of an Atrocity

By Joseph D. Kubal

Lidice – only citizens of Czech heritage, World War II veterans and history buffs might remember it now; but 71 years ago, the name was on everyone’s lips. On June 10, 1942, Adolf Hitler initiated one of the single most notorious war crimes of the 20th Century – and then deliberately broadcast it to the world, to discourage acts of insurrection against the Nazi regime.

Lidice was a massacre and obliteration of an entire town, right down to knocking all the buildings down, leveling the landscape and even diverting a river that had run through the town, so that all physical evidence that the town had ever existed was destroyed.

Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame Class of 2013

The Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame recognizes "those people and places along Route 66 whose blend of hardy individualism and grassroots community spirit gave the road such special character."

To qualify for election to the Hall of Fame, nominees must have made significant contributions to the character or history of the Illinois portion of Route 66 from 1926 to 1977 while it was an official United States highway in the State of Illinois.

We are extremely proud to present the very special group of honorees we are inducting into our Hall of Fame on June 8th, 2013 at our annual Hall of Fame Banquet.
