Special Offer to 25th Anniversary Motor Tour Participants!

By Preservation Chairman, John Weiss

Preservation takes many forms. It can be buildings, roads, signs, structures and objects. Preservation can also be stories and remembrances of people, places and things. Preservation is the heartbeat and soul of our Mother Road, Route 66.

This year the Preservation Committee is doing something that has never been done before and will never do again.

First, some information. This is the 25th Anniversary of the Route 66 Association of Illinois. As a result I wanted to do something pertaining to Preservation that would also commemorate this extraordinary accomplishment.

Strevell House Update

Our thanks to Pontiac, IL Tourism Director, Ellie Alexander, for providing the following update on the historic Strevell House.

With thousands of volunteer man-hours and generous donations, the Livingston County Historical Society is slowly working towards its goal of preserving the Jason W. Strevell house in Pontiac, Illinois. The Strevell home is the last existing structure in the county known to have hosted the nation’s 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. According to the Livingston Historical Society president, Bob Sear, saving this home is one of the most important current projects of the historical society.

Greetings Everybody,

Let’s get together for a fun meeting about our favorite subject, Preservation. So much has been accomplished since the Preservation Committee was formed in 1996. However our efforts and concerns are not finished. We have a lot to discuss and do.
Come and renew your friendships with like-minded people. Even if you are unable to participate in current projects at this time, that doesn’t mean we don’t want to see you. We do!

Josh and Wendy Friedrich Enjoy the Relighting of the Vic Suhling Sign

Our destination was Litchfield, IL for the relighting ceremony of the Vic Suhling Gas For Less sign located in front of the Litchfield Route 66 Welcome Center and Museum. The sign had been dark for 40 years. It was a bit windy but the sky was a beautiful blue with a few white clouds.

Please Help Save Historic St. Mary Carmelite Church on Route 66 in Joliet, IL

The following letter was written by Maria R. Traska, independent journalist, policy analyst and blogger. We wanted to bring the situation she mentions to your attention, considering this historic building is along Route 66.

The original plan for the preservation and repurposing of this church (as well as the timeline of its history) was posted last year here on this website in, The Bells of St. Mary’s: Another Rescue in the Making? written by local author and historian, Joseph D. Kubal.
