Red Carpet Corridor Festival Plans in Progress
Our thanks to Pontiac Tourism Director, Ellie Alexander, for providing the following press release:
The 9th annual Red Carpet Corridor Festival will run May 2 & 3, 2015. This festival takes place along a 90-mile stretch of historic Route 66 – starting in Joliet in the north and ending at Towanda, Illinois in the south. Along that length of America’s Main Street, there will be scheduled events both days of the festival. Each of the 13 communities along the Mother Road will stage special activities for young and old alike. There will be bake sales, flea markets, car shows, history displays and presentations, contests, dances, live music, great food, and fun for everyone. You can examine the full slate of events by visiting the Red Carpet Corridor’s webpage.
The Red Carpet Corridor Festival promises to be even bigger and better in 2015. As they have done in the past, the organizers will be offering those who travel the entire 90 mile distance and who stop into each community along the way, a special commemorative collectable memento. Each town will have a distinctive decoration on their own “wooden nickel” and collecting them over the course of the two day event is one of the fun things to do. But remember, you have to visit each community in person to pick up your keepsake wooden trinket, and they are available while supplies last.
There will be a BBQ Rib contest and a cupcake bake-off in Wilmington, another BBQ contest in Dwight, and delicious baked goods for sale in Braceville. Antique tractors can be seen in Elwood, Godley will host a cruise show for cars, and Chenoa will host a motorcycle show. In Pontiac a new museum and several new exhibits will be unveiled. Geocaching will be an offered activity in Braceville, and both Braceville and Pontiac will hold Scavenger Hunts. And, of course, nearly every one of the thirteen communities that make up the Red Carpet Corridor will have either a flea market, garage sales, or community sale events. The sales are part of the “Kicks on 66 Sale.”
The Red Carpet Corridor Festival is a wonderful way to start out the spring and summer travel season. Pack up the car and head out on Route 66 to enjoy history and some very special events. For more information, contact Ellie Alexander at Pontiac Tourism – (815) 844-5847.
