Alignments of Route 66 through Pontiac
Brown = 1926-1927 (the Route used this alignment while a bridge across the Vermillion River was being built for the intended path of US 66)
Green = 1927-1943
Yellow = 1943-1977
(Note that the very southern end of the 1926-1943 alignments no longer exists)
Division Street Bridge
The Preservation Committee’s first project was the restoration of the IL 4 signage on the bridge, built in 1926 and spanning North Creek. The original bridge was replaced in 2005, but the end posts were saved and used on the new span.
Cozy Inn Restaurant
Now Mario’s Pizza, this restaurant, at 748 W Madison St., is a member of the Hall of Fame.
Pontiac Route 66 Murals
Throughout Pontiac, a number of murals can be seen, many completed by the Walldogs. There is even an example, by Diaz Sign Art, on the back of our Museum and Hall of Fame. When visiting, be sure to check out the art across from the back of the Museum, which may possibly make you want to go grab a malt!
Illinois State Police District 6 Headquarters
To the south of Pontiac is this abandoned structure, which, from the air, resembles a pistol. While the building is not open to the public, the grounds are available, including a sculpture and a sign about the building, which is a member of the Association’s Hall of Fame and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
